  • An average of 40% of sludge, by weight, added to a digestion system is non-degradable, some of this sludge is derived from plastic particles. Plastics derived from vegetable-based oils may be broken down biologically, but require much longer time than most facilities or equipment allow. The remainder of the sludge is made of organic matter which is food for microbes, like those in EM•1®. With EM•1® as part of the treatment cycle, one can achieve a greater amount of breakdown in a shorter amount of time. The use of EM® in the collection system will encourage a dramatic growth of beneficial microorganisms, including sludge worms, that will break down solids.

The average sludge reduction achieved with consistent EM•1® application is about 33%. However, sludge digestion rates have been reported as high as 90%. These dramatic differences vary according to the system design, the wastewater makeup, and the management of the system.

    How It Works

The live microbes in the EM•1® will work on breaking down lignin, carbohydrates, cellulose, and other starches in the wastewater sludge. Laboratory analysis has demonstrated these effects.

This is evidenced by a reduction of BOD, COD, and sludge levels.

    Applications

The product in injected in the influent line, injected at a rate of !:10,000 on a daily basis. A siphon/venture unit can be installed to work on a pressurized trigger or an injection pump can be installed on site. For economical purposes on large systems, we generally do all applications with an Activated version of EM•1®.

In systems that have high flow rates or excessive sludge levels, the addition of EM•1® Bokashi can accelerate sludge digestion.
