Growing Plants With Effective Microorganisms

E-mail Print PDF

An essential part of having healthy plants is to have healthy soil teaming with beneficial microbes in your soil.

EM•1® Microbial Inoculant provides enzymes, trace minerals, vitamins, and various organic acids ...and live beneficial cultures that support the growth of other beneficial microbes (including mychorrizae) worms, and insects already in your soil, bringing nature back in balance. This balance of beneficial microbes, with the addition of plenty of organic matter, produces a disease-suppressive soil in which plants will grow more resistant to pests and disease. Since microbes also convert organic matter to a usable food source for plants, fruits and vegetables will not only taste better, they will be more nutritious, and last longer.  Beneficial microbes also produce lots of polysaccharides, glues that hold the soil together and hold in moisture, improving drought resistance.

How to Apply EM•1® Microbial Inoculant:
It is very simple. Just fill the reservoir of a hose-end sprayer with EM•1® (activated or not) and spray all your plants. One hose-end sprayer will treat about 1/8 acre. For best results spray once per week throughout the growing season and pre-treat all your organic matter (potting soil, peat moss, compost, etc) with EM•1® as instructed in other parts of our website. Some hose-end sprayers let you dial in the dilution rates. You can use the rates suggested on our label to set application rate.

In this section, we offer several guidelines for your success with Effective Microorganisms™ or EM•1®

Composting

Compost With Effective Microorganisms™:
A simple way to increase the organic matter in your soil is by using lots of compost made with EM•1®. Once you have some high quality compost, you can make a rich compost tea and inoculate it with EM•1®. Worm castings and castings teas have been receiving a tremendous amounts of attention lately and can also be made better with the addition of EM•1®.

For more information, please visit our section on composting.

Spraying Plants

Foliar Treatments with Effective Microorganisms™:
Once the soil is treated and foliage starts to appear, foliar applications will maintain the plants above ground. Whatever falls off the leaves will help inoculate the soil. EM•1® is sprayed on the leaves of plants throughout the growing season to help drop disease and pest pressure. In addition to spraying EM•1® directly onto plants, some other formulas can be made for natural pest and disease control. These formulas include EM5 and EM Fermented Plant Extract (EM FPE).

Testimonial

I have been using EM•1® in the gallons for years and all my plants are growing bigger and much more tolerant of temperature extremes.

Thanks so much,
