Effective Microorganisms Field Crop Applications

E-mail Print PDF

This is a generalized guideline to using EM-1® Microbial Inoculant for crops. For custom programs that consider soil/climate type, current fertility, cultural methods, and economic analysis contact EM America.  Custom  EM-1® Microbial Inoculant programs may include EM-1® compost and bokashi, EM5, and EM Fermented Plant Extracts (EM FPE), as well as other mineral and nutrient inputs.

Inoculating Field Crops with Effective Microorganisms

We recommend Activating EM-1® for maximum cost effectiveness. EM-1® is applied at the rates recommended below.

Seed Treatment

Seed Treatment:
Soak seeds one day before planting in a 1:10,000 EM-1®/water solution. If the seed cannot be soaked, moisten the seed before planting with the same 1:10,000 EM-1®/water solution.

Transplants

Transplanting:
Water-in new transplants with a 1:750 EM-1®/water solution. EM-1® can be added with other products, such as organic fertilizers, mineral supplements and compost teas during this process.

Foliar

Foliar Treatments:
Apply EM-1® with a sprayer at a 1:500 EM-1®/water dilution rate. Application frequency should be every 2-6 weeks depending on conditions and objectives. Approximately 1 gallon/acre of EM-1® should be applied during a foliar treatment. If spray rate is less than 100 gallons per acre and more EM-1® is needed for desired results a lower dilution rate, 1:250, may be necessary. Treat a smaller test plot with the lower dilution rate and monitor the crop response for 24-48 hours before treating the entire crop.

Soils

Soil Treatment:
Add EM-1® to irrigation water at a rate of 5 gallons of EM-1® per acre. This can be done 4-8 times a year depending on climate. Dry or cold climates require more frequent treatments. If you do not irrigate, EM-1® can be drilled into soil at a 3-6 inch depth and a rate of 5 gallons per acre. If soil organic matter is below 1% additional molasses may be added to the EM-1® application at a rate of 1/2 gal. molasses per 1 gallon of EM-1®. The molasses will help accelerate the production of stable organic matter colloidal particles (humus)

Cover Crops

Cover Cropping:
Apply EM-1® as a foliar treatment at a 1:100 EM-1®/water dilution rate just before or after the cover crop is incorporated back into the soil. This is an important step to increase nutrient availability and humus production derived from the cover crop.
