Microorganisms cleaned the Earth in its early stages when it was polluted, helped create the oceans, rivers, and soil, and helped maintain an environment in which living things could thrive. But nowadays we are inundated with chemicals—pesticides, chlorine, etc.—and run off water from homes and industry pollutes our rivers and oceans; but what’s more, humans, who cannot live without microorganisms, are insisting on a fanatical cleanliness that has led to the production of antibacterial products whose aim is to eliminate microorganisms. It’s easy to imagine what the results will be.
Eliminating microorganisms means that microorganisms will find it hard to live in the present environment, the number and types of microorganisms will drop sharply, and the density of microorganisms living in the soil, rivers, and oceans will also drop.
Imagine, for example, what would happen if a large amount of polluted organic matter is released into a river. Without sufficient microorganisms to break down that organic matter, when it reaches its final destination, the ocean, eutrophication will occur, and an abnormal amount of plankton will appear. Too much plankton will lead to a lack of oxygen in the ocean, and abnormal occurrences of red tide and other phenomenon. Of course, if there is insufficient oxygen on the ocean surface and below, fish and the types of seaweed that purify the oceans will die out. And we will end up with polluted oceans, and the ability to purify the Earth’s environment will decrease even further.
This is not just confined to the oceans, however. In an environment unfriendly to microorganisms the plant-soil cycle discussed above will not occur. We must reaffirm the symbiotic relationship between microorganisms and humans, and look for an ever more beneficial way for them to co-exist. This is what is needed to preserve the Earth, and mankind, in good health.
This is EM America's main site for Effective Microorganisms™ products. This site is designed to provide our visitors with much of the general information on Effective Microorganisms™ and EM Technology® to introduce the technology and many of its uses. This site is by no means exhaustive.
For our professional customers, EM America has developed another stand alone site for environmental professionals: Environmental Site (www.effectivemicrobes.com) Please visit this site if you are looking for more data and methods to our approaches for dealing with environmental issues.
For decades, environmental groups have been discussing environmental problems. Very few of them have offered solutions. EM America focuses on using Effective Microorganisms Technology® to provide solutions to pollution. Effective Microorganisms Technology® is easy to use and cost effective because it does not requires changes to the existing treatment and collection system and application equipment is relatively inexpensive.
