EM Ceramics (or EM-X® Ceramics) come in two categories based on their firing temperatures; high temperature and low temperature. The high temperature ceramics are harder than the low temperature ceramics and the low temperature ceramics are more porous.

- All but the Indoor, Underfloor, cellular seal, microwave plate, and Terra Powder ceramics, are used for water structuring.
- They all affect the size of water molecule clusters, decreasing the size of the clusters through ultrasonic frequencies.
The ceramics work by adsorption, cleaving impurities from liquids by ultrasonic frequencies than can be measured in electron volts (eV). The impurities are pulled out of liquids and enter the pores of the ceramics. The lower temperature ceramics are softer and more porous. This is the reason for the shorter lifetime expectancy of the low temperature ceramics.
Low temperature and high temperature ceramics pull different substances out of fluids (because they emit different frequencies) and are often used with the higher temperature ceramics. Reports from experiments with ceramics have demonstrated their antioxidant effects in preventing rusting (especially in concrete), increasing freshness in refrigerators, improving BTU output of gas burners, and extending the life of cooking oils.

EM® Ceramics have been used in agriculture in various ways.
As is described in the section on ceramics for soil conditioning (p.4), the use of EM® Ceramics together with diluted EM-1® Microbial Inoculant clearly improves and stabilizes crop quality in terms of their taste and specific gravity, increases yields and reduces damages by disease and insects. It has also been reported that the efficiency of farm work was improved and that damage by continuous cropping was prevented.
It is the result of an experiment studying how much nutrition for the plant (in this case ammonium ions, the main nutrient) is retained in the soil. It shows how much ammonium was adsorbed by the EM-X® Ceramic N Powder placed in a water solution containing 20 mg/l of ammonium. After 300 hours, most of the ammonium was adsorbed in the ceramic, showing the ceramic has a high nutrition-holding capacity.
