Commercial aquaculture covers a variety of crops from vegetables to fish to shrimp. The system designs vary from indoor systems to outdoor pond systems. Depending on the fish, the water may be fresh, brackish, or salt water. Another factor to consider is the evaporation rate.

We are often asked if EM•1® Microbial Inoculant can be used in someone's pond or aquaculture system. A tremendous amount of information on the various styles of fish farms ranging from shrimp farms in Thailand that are in the ocean to catfish farms in China has been generated over the years on Effective Microorganisms® in large-scale aquaculture operations.

The use of Effective Microorganisms&trade for shrimp production was introduced in Ecuador during the year 2001.  EM® offers a simple and practical methodology that can be easily implemented in the different areas and methods of crustacean raising. This particular methodology was developed in Ecuador through a joint effort with El Rosario, Agearth Ecuador, and Sambito S.A.

Use of Effective Microorganisms&trade in shrimp production had been implemented in Costa Rica, Perú, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand, having promising results, basically on three parameters: survival percentage, feed conversion and better weekly growth.  In addition, the entire shrimp environment ( soil and water) is improved.  When these parameters are better we, logically, get other benefits of production including: shorter cycle production, feed savings, disease and viral resistance, and other benefits resulting from a healthier growing environment.
